Janet grew up in a house where fabric scraps and threads were always available, and cloth and stitch remain her most natural creative medium, often combined with her other lifelong love, words and texts.

Her work is essentially abstract and concerned with texture and colour, particularly the subtle gradations of broken colour, but meanings and narratives often emerge as the work progresses; frequently the passage of time and memories, much influenced by Wabi Sabi and the appreciation of the beauty of age and decay.

Themes, concepts, images, even poems sometimes, are all inspiration, but they are always just jumping off points. It is the intuitive combination of cloth, usually her own dyed, painted or discharged cloth, finding colours, textures and arrangements that please her – simply letting things happen.

After a very long interval between her studies in stitched textiles, during which she pursued a more lucrative but very different career, Janet has returned with great pleasure to her first and enduring love of stitched textiles.

Janet has a City & Guilds and BTEC, a Diploma in Higher Education in Stitched Textile from Bucks University Windsor campus, and an MA in Fine Art Practice from Chichester University.
